Why your Longboat Key pool burns through chemicals so fast

Your chlorine tablets shouldn't vanish overnight, and a single bag of shock shouldn't feel like a temporary patch. Yet plenty of Longboat Key homeowners find themselves spending far more on pool chemicals than their neighbors up north ever did, sometimes two or three times as much, and they can't figure out why. The short answer is that several forces specific to this stretch of Florida's Gulf coast are stacking up against you at the same time. Understanding each one makes it a lot easier to stop throwing money at the symptom and start fixing the actual cause.
The Florida sun is not your friend when it comes to chlorine
Free chlorine, the kind that actually sanitizes your water, breaks down under ultraviolet light. That's not a flaw in the product; it's just chemistry. The problem is that Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, and the rest of our barrier islands sit in one of the highest UV-index zones in the continental United States, and we get intense sun for more months of the year than almost anywhere else.
Without a stabilizer (cyanuric acid, or CYA) in the water, unprotected chlorine in full Florida sunshine can degrade completely within a few hours. That means a Monday morning dose of chlorine could be functionally gone before Tuesday's kids are in the pool. If your CYA level is low or missing entirely, this is almost certainly where your chemicals are going.
The fix sounds simple: raise your CYA to the right range, typically 30 to 50 ppm for a traditionally chlorinated pool. But here's where homeowners run into a second problem. CYA accumulates over time, and if you've been adding stabilized chlorine tablets (trichlor) all season, your CYA may actually be too high, which ties up your chlorine in a bound form that can't sanitize. Counterintuitively, more CYA beyond a certain point means you need more chlorine to get the same effect. High bather load and organic contamination
Chlorine doesn't just fight algae and bacteria. It reacts with anything organic that enters the water: sunscreen, body oils, sweat, hair products, even airborne dust and pollen. Every time those organic compounds enter the pool, they consume what chemists call "chlorine demand." You add chlorine; it gets used up attacking those organics before it ever has a chance to sanitize.
On our barrier islands, this is an amplified problem. Guests arrive from the beach, coated in SPF 50. Kids jump in without showering. The Gulf breeze carries fine organic particles, sea spray, and salt mist across the deck and into the water constantly. The practical takeaway: shocking the pool after a heavy-use weekend isn't an overreaction, it's routine maintenance. But if you're shocking twice a week just to keep the water clear, the root cause is usually that the combined chlorine (chloramines) built up from organic contamination, and a single bag of shock isn't breaking it all down fast enough. You may need a more aggressive breakpoint chlorination, or a thorough brush-and-vacuum session to remove the biofilm feeding the demand.
Your water chemistry is out of balance and chlorine is paying the price
Chlorine works best within a fairly narrow pH window, roughly 7.2 to 7.6. Outside that range, its effectiveness drops off sharply. At a pH of 7.8, chlorine is working at less than half its normal sanitizing efficiency. At 8.0, you're getting almost no bang for your buck at all, even though a test strip shows chlorine is "present."
High pH is extremely common in Sarasota-area pools for a few reasons. Our local fill water tends to run on the alkaline side. Aeration from waterfalls, fountains, and spillover spas raises pH naturally. Saltwater chlorinators also trend high. Total alkalinity and calcium hardness compound the issue. Low alkalinity makes pH swing wildly from day to day. High calcium can cause scaling that traps chlorine and reduces circulation efficiency. Getting these numbers balanced isn't just cosmetic. It's the foundation that makes every other chemical work properly. Your filtration system isn't doing its share
Chemicals and filtration are partners. When the filter isn't running long enough, or isn't cleaning effectively, suspended particles, dead algae, and organic debris stay in the water. Chlorine binds to that material and gets consumed. You add more chlorine. It binds to more debris. The cycle continues.
On the Gulf coast, this matters more than in other climates. Gulf breezes push fine organic material and salt particles into pools constantly. After a rainy afternoon, runoff carries fertilizers, grass clippings, and soil into the water. That all adds up to a higher-than-average debris load that demands both more filtration time and more frequent filter cleaning.
A filter that's due for a backwash or cartridge cleaning is working at reduced capacity. A pump that's undersized for the pool volume isn't turning the water over often enough for chemicals to distribute evenly. And a pump timer set for six hours during a sweltering July in Sarasota is probably four hours short. As a general rule, in peak summer heat, your pump should be running long enough to cycle the full pool volume at least once per day, and often closer to twice.

Algae growth you haven't seen yet
Early-stage algae, the kind that hasn't turned the water green yet, is one of the most common hidden causes of high chlorine consumption. The algae colony establishes itself in shaded corners, on rough plaster surfaces, behind steps, or on the floor near returns. It hasn't bloomed visibly, but it's there, feeding on nutrients and consuming chlorine as fast as you add it.
On Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key, where pools are often surrounded by lush landscaping and get significant afternoon shade, this is a very common scenario. The pool looks fine. The water is clear. But you keep adding chemicals and they disappear. A thorough brushing of every surface, including walls, steps, and the floor, is often what reveals the problem. The brush disturbs the biofilm, the chlorine can reach it, and consumption drops back to normal.
If the algae is more established, you may need a targeted algaecide alongside your shock treatment. But note that algaecide is not a substitute for correct chlorine levels and pH, it's an adjunct. Relying on algaecide alone while the underlying chemistry is off just adds another chemical to your bill without solving the problem.
Phosphates: the fertilizer that feeds the problem
Phosphates are nutrients that algae thrive on. They enter pool water from a surprising number of sources: fertilizer runoff, decaying leaves, certain pool chemicals, even the municipal water supply. Once phosphates are elevated, you're essentially growing a garden in your pool that chlorine has to constantly fight back.
This is particularly relevant for pools near canals or landscaped areas on Longboat Key and the surrounding keys, where irrigation runoff and leaf litter are a constant reality. A phosphate test isn't part of the basic strip test kit most homeowners use, so elevated phosphates often go undetected for months while chlorine consumption climbs.
A phosphate remover can address the immediate problem, but the longer-term fix is reducing the source: keeping leaf debris out of the pool promptly, minimizing deck runoff, and rinsing off any pool toys or equipment that have been in contact with lawn areas.
What you can actually do about it
Solving a high-chemical-consumption problem isn't usually a single fix. It's a process of ruling out causes one by one:
- Test your CYA level and adjust it into the correct range for your sanitizer type
- Check pH and total alkalinity, and correct them before adding anything else
- Inspect and clean or backwash your filter
- Evaluate your pump run time for the current season
- Brush every surface in the pool and watch whether chlorine demand drops
- Test for phosphates if the problem persists after everything else is corrected
- Consider whether bather load and organic contamination are higher than typical
