Longboat Key Pool Service Call us today888-825-7696

If you own a pool on Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key, Bird Key, St. Armands, Anna Maria Island, or along Sarasota's bayfront and canal-front streets, you already know that the water here is not forgiving. Salt air accelerates corrosion on equipment. Calcium from hard water builds up on tile faster than it would inland. Rain events can tip chemistry out of balance overnight. And if you are a seasonal owner, the pool keeps aging while you are away.

These questions come up regularly before someone decides to call us. We have answered them as directly as we can, because the goal is to help you make a good decision, not to sell you something you do not need.

One thing worth saying upfront: pool service on a barrier island is different from pool service in a typical suburban neighborhood. The proximity to salt water changes how fast metal fittings, pump housings, and heater components degrade. Algae can take hold much more quickly when a pool sits idle between visits. And water chemistry that looks fine to the eye can still be eating your plaster or irritating your skin. These are not problems you solve with a bottle of chlorine tablets from the hardware store. They require consistent attention from someone who visits on a reliable schedule and knows what to look for before a small issue becomes a costly repair.

We serve residential pools across the Sarasota barrier islands. Most of our customers fall into one of two groups: full-time residents who want their pool maintained without having to think about it, and seasonal owners who need to know the pool is in good hands when they are not around. Both groups tend to have the same core questions. If yours is not answered below, reach out directly and we will give you a straight answer.

What does a weekly pool cleaning visit actually include?
Each visit covers skimming the surface, brushing the walls and floor, emptying the pump and skimmer baskets, checking and adjusting all chemical levels, and a visual inspection of the equipment. The chemical check is the part that matters most. Clear water is not always balanced water, and water that is out of balance damages plaster, irritates eyes and skin, and shortens the life of your equipment.
How do I know if my pool chemistry is actually balanced, not just clear?
Clear water tells you the chlorine is working on algae, but it says nothing about pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, or cyanuric acid. Any of those can be off while the water looks fine. Low pH eats plaster and corrodes metal. High calcium leaves scale on tile and inside pipes. The only way to know is testing with calibrated equipment on a regular schedule, which is part of every visit we make.
I am only here for part of the year. What happens to the pool when I am away?
A pool that sits without regular service in Florida's heat will grow algae, lose water to evaporation and possible leaks, and drift in chemistry until the surface and equipment start to suffer. Seasonal owners are a significant part of our customer base, and we maintain the same weekly schedule year-round. Your pool is looked after on the same schedule no matter where you happen to be.
What is green-to-clean recovery and how long does it take?
When a pool turns green, it means algae has taken over. Recovery involves shock-dosing the water with chlorine, running the filter continuously, brushing to break up algae colonies, and retesting until chemistry is stable. The timeline depends on how far the pool has gone and the condition of the filter. Mild cases can clear in a few days. A heavily neglected pool can take a week or more.
Salt air seems to damage everything on my property. Does it affect pool equipment?
It does, and faster than most people expect. Pump motor housings, heater components, electrical connections, and metal fittings are all vulnerable to salt air corrosion. A small amount of surface rust on an exposed fitting can work inward over time. Catching it early, during a routine visit, is the difference between a minor repair and replacing a whole unit. This is one reason consistent weekly service is more important on a barrier island than it is inland.
How do I know if my pool has a leak?
The clearest sign is losing more than a quarter inch of water per day after accounting for evaporation. You can do a rough evaporation check by placing a bucket of pool water on a step, marking both water levels, and comparing them after 24 hours. If the pool is dropping faster than the bucket, you likely have a leak. We offer leak detection to locate the source, which could be the shell, plumbing, fittings, or equipment.
What does a pre-purchase pool inspection cover?
Before you close on a property, a pool inspection gives you a clear picture of the pool's actual condition. We check the surface for cracks, staining, and delamination, assess the equipment for age and function, look for signs of leaks, and evaluate the overall state of the plumbing and fittings. It is a lot easier to negotiate repairs before you own the pool than after. We serve buyers on all the Sarasota barrier islands.
My pool tile has a white crusty buildup along the waterline. What is that?
That is calcium scale, and it is extremely common in this area due to the local water chemistry. It hardens over time and becomes increasingly difficult to remove if it is left alone. We clean waterline tile as part of our resurfacing and tile services. Keeping it clean is also a maintenance task, because heavy scale buildup can hold bacteria and make it harder to keep chemistry stable.
When does a pool need to be resurfaced?
Plaster typically shows its age through roughness, staining that does not respond to chemical treatment, visible pitting, or peeling in areas. A plaster surface that has become rough is hard on swimmers and harder to keep clean, because algae clings more easily to a pitted surface than a smooth one. If your pool surface is showing those signs, we can assess it and walk you through the resurfacing process.
Can you repair pool equipment, or do I need a separate contractor?
Equipment repair and replacement is part of what we do. Pumps, motors, filters, heaters, automation systems, and valves are all things we work on for residential pools across the barrier islands. If a component is beyond repair, we will tell you that directly and give you a clear picture of the replacement cost before any work is done.
What should I do if my pool turns green between scheduled visits?
Call us. Do not wait for the next scheduled visit, because algae spreads quickly in Florida heat and the longer it sits, the harder and more expensive the recovery. In the meantime, keep the pump running if it is working. Do not add random chemicals without knowing your current levels, because overdosing can create its own problems. A green pool is fixable, but it is much easier when it is caught early.
Do you service pools on all the Sarasota barrier islands?
Yes. We cover Longboat Key, Lido Key, Bird Key, St. Armands, Siesta Key, and Anna Maria Island, as well as the bayfront and canal-front neighborhoods of Sarasota proper. If you are not sure whether your address falls within our service area, just call or email and we will confirm it for you.

A few things are worth keeping in mind as you evaluate any pool service on these islands.

Consistency matters more than most people realize. A pool visited on a random day each week, or skipped when the technician is short-staffed, will drift. Chemistry that drifts too far in either direction can damage plaster, bleach vinyl, or make the water genuinely unsafe. The same-day, same-week schedule we hold to is not a marketing point. It is what keeps the water stable between visits.

Equipment life is the other thing that surprises people. On a barrier island, the environment is harder on pool equipment than it is almost anywhere else in the country. A pump motor that might last eight to ten years in a dry climate can fail in four or five here if it is not monitored. A heat exchanger that goes unnoticed while it corrodes can eventually put metals into the water. Catching that kind of problem early, during a routine visit, is far cheaper than dealing with it after the damage is done.

If you are a seasonal owner, the pre-departure and pre-arrival checkpoints matter. We see pools every season that were "closed" for summer without proper chemistry adjustment. By the time the owner returns, the surface is stained, the equipment has corroded, or the water has turned completely. Getting the chemistry right before you leave, and having someone check the pool through the off-season, is genuinely protective of your investment.

Green-to-clean recovery, leak detection, resurfacing prep, tile cleaning, pre-purchase inspections: all of these are services we provide for pools across Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key, Bird Key, St. Armands, Anna Maria Island, and Sarasota's waterfront neighborhoods. If you are not sure whether your situation calls for one of those services or just a conversation, call us at 888-825-7696 or send a note to hello@longboatkeypoolservice.com. We will tell you honestly what we think you need.
