How to test for phosphates
Standard pool test strips and basic drop-test kits do not test for phosphates. You need either a dedicated phosphate test kit (available at most pool supply stores) or a water test from a professional. Phosphate levels are measured in parts per billion (ppb). Most pool professionals consider anything above 100 to 200 ppb worth addressing, and levels above 500 ppb can create serious algae pressure even when chlorine is well maintained.

Skimmer baskets and filters need attention. Keep skimmer baskets clean so that leaves and debris do not sit in the water and decompose.
