Salt air off the Gulf is brutal on pool equipment. Out here, pumps, heaters, and salt chlorinators corrode and fail years sooner than they would inland, and a dead pump in July turns a clear pool green in days. We repair and replace the gear that keeps your pool running, and because we're at your pool weekly, we usually catch a failing part before it leaves you stranded. ## Why coastal pool equipment fails early
Pool equipment on a barrier island lives a harder life than the manufacturer designed it for, and the failures are predictable enough to plan around.
**Salt air corrodes everything metallic.** Pump housings, motor shells, heater cabinets, fasteners, unions, the electrical terminations inside a control box. Corrosion at an electrical connection is the one that catches people out, because it presents as an intermittent fault long before anything looks wrong.
**Heaters suffer most.** A gas heater's heat exchanger is the most expensive component in a typical equipment pad and the most vulnerable to both salt and water chemistry. Corrosive water eats it from the inside; salt air works on the cabinet and the burner assembly from the outside.
**Salt cells are consumables.** They scale, they lose plate coating, and they stop producing. A cell in properly balanced water lasts substantially longer than one in water that has been allowed to run high pH.
**Pump seals fail.** They are a wear item everywhere, and heat and run hours here shorten the interval.
None of this means coastal equipment is a bad investment. It means the maintenance interval and the replacement cycle are shorter than the brochure assumes, and planning for that is cheaper than being surprised by it.
## Repair or replace
We give you the honest comparison rather than defaulting to the bigger invoice, and there are a few reliable rules.
**Repair** when the failure is a discrete component on otherwise sound equipment - a pump seal, a capacitor, a heater ignition assembly, a control board on a unit that is not old.
**Replace** when the failure is structural: a corroded heat exchanger, a pump housing that has gone porous, a motor that has been through a flood. Repairing those buys months, not years.
**Replace for efficiency** when a single-speed pump fails. Variable-speed pumps use a fraction of the electricity of the single-speed units they replace, and in Florida they are also required for most new and replacement installations. The running-cost difference is large enough that it usually dominates the decision.
Where equipment is at an age where more failures are coming, we will say so - fitting a new heater to a system whose pump and cell are both near the end is not a favor to anyone.
## The equipment pad as a system
The thing that separates a good repair from a parts swap is looking at the pad as a whole.
A pump that keeps losing its seal may be cavitating because of a suction-side restriction. A heater that keeps faulting may be short of flow because the filter is loading up. A salt cell reading low may be perfectly healthy and reporting the water's actual salinity. Fixing the component without finding the cause gets you the same repair again.
So we check flow, pressure and the plumbing either side of whatever failed, and we tell you what we found even when the answer is "the part you asked about is fine".
## Making the next set last longer
Three things extend coastal equipment life more than anything else.
**Rinse the pad with fresh water regularly.** Salt sitting on a motor housing keeps working; salt rinsed off does not. This is free and almost nobody does it.
**Keep the chemistry right.** Scale-forming water destroys heaters and cells from the inside, and corrosive water does the same by another route. Consistent [weekly balancing](/services/weekly-cleaning) is genuinely equipment maintenance, not just water treatment.
**Site and shelter the pad where you can.** Equipment out of direct spray and up off ground that floods lasts materially longer, and both are far easier to arrange when something is being replaced anyway.

## Variable-speed pumps, and why the maths is unusual
When a single-speed pump fails on this coast, replacement almost always beats repair, and the reason is running cost rather than the repair bill.
A single-speed pump has one setting: full. It moves far more water than filtration actually requires, and it does so for however many hours a day the timer says. A variable-speed pump runs slowly for most of that time and steps up only when something needs the flow. Because power draw falls sharply as speed drops, running longer at low speed costs a fraction of running briefly at full - and it filters better, because filtration improves with turnover time rather than velocity.
The practical result on a Florida pool running most of the year is a difference in electricity that is large rather than marginal. It is also why Florida requires variable-speed on most new and replacement installations above a certain size, so in many cases the choice has already been made.
A quieter pad is the part owners notice first. A variable-speed pump at filtration speed is close to silent, which matters when the equipment sits under a bedroom window.
## Heaters on a coastal pool
Heaters are the most expensive thing on most pads and the most misunderstood.
**Gas heaters** heat fast and are the right answer for a pool used occasionally - a spa, or a pool warmed for a weekend. They do not care about air temperature.
**Heat pumps** are far cheaper to run and much slower, and they lose capacity as the air gets cooler, which on the Gulf Coast means they work well for most of the year and struggle exactly when you most want heat. They suit owners who hold a pool at temperature continuously rather than heating it on demand.
Whichever you have, two things kill them here: water chemistry and salt air. Scale-forming water plates the inside of a heat exchanger and cooks it; corrosive water eats it. Salt works on the cabinet, the burner tray and the electrical side from outside. A heater on a properly balanced pool with a rinsed cabinet lasts years longer than the identical unit two doors down.
## Salt systems: what actually wears out
Salt chlorine generators are the equipment owners understand least, and the source of most avoidable spending on a coastal pool.
The **cell** is the consumable. Inside it, coated titanium plates convert salt into chlorine, and the coating is spent gradually by use. That is normal and expected. What is not normal is the cell that dies early, and there are two usual causes: scale bridging the plates, which comes from water that has been running high pH and high calcium, and running the cell at a high output percentage continuously because the pool is being asked to make more chlorine than it should need.
The **control board** is the other half, and on this coast it fails from corrosion and surge as often as from age. Salt-laden air gets into an outdoor enclosure and works on the terminations.
A cell reporting low salt is not always a cell fault. Cells read salinity by conductivity, which changes with water temperature, so a cool morning in January can produce a low reading on a pool that is perfectly salted. Replacing a healthy cell because of a January reading is a mistake we see regularly.
## What to do when something fails while you are away
Most of the pools we look after belong to people who are not on the island year-round, and equipment does not wait for anyone's calendar.
